Rapid City Area survey monuments

Start map

Project Introduction - In 1999, the City of Rapid City undertook a project to establish both primary and secondary control in the Rapid City area. Using the SD HARN as the basis, a primary network was placed and surveyed using GPS. The 19 new monuments of the primary network were submitted to the National Geodetic Survey for inclusion in the National Spatial Reference System.

A secondary network of 52 stations was also surveyed, using the primary network as control. These were mostly existing Rapid City stations. In 2002, 117 secondary stations were added. The project goal is to eventually provide a GPS surveyed station every 1/2 mile within the City area.

The vertical control for all stations was determined by static GPS observation methods using Geoid 99. The project design was for 0.1 ft accuracy, although all checks of elevation indicated an accuracy of 0.05 ft.

For more information on the survey project or specific monuments, contact the Rapid City Engineering Division at 394-4154.

General specifications

Coordinate system South Dakota State Plane, South Zone, feet
Horizontal datum NAD83/96
Vertical datum NAVD88
Accuracies
Primary - horizontal 1st order to exceed 1:250,000
Primary - vertical 0.1 ft plus/minus
Secondary - horizontal 1st order
Secondary - vertical 0.1 ft plus/minus

Each station has an associated database record that can be accessed via the map. Click on the "Get Information" button then click on the station of interest. Listed below are the items in the database record. Note that the 2002 secondary control points do not have latitude, longitude, or NAVD88 elevation entries at the present time. These have station numbers in the 2000 - 2135 range. Also note the decimal part of the elevations for even foot values will be truncated by the software, thus will not show the ".00".

Database item Explanation
Station name Station name
Type Primary or secondary
Latitude NAD83/96 latitude
Longitude NAD83/96 longitude
Northing NAD83/96 SD stateplane south zone northing (feet)
Easting NAD83/96 SD stateplane south zone easting (feet)
NGVD29 Elevation NGVD29 elevation (feet) to nearest 0.1 foot
NAVD88 Elevation NAVD88 elevation (feet) to nearest 0.1 foot
PID NGS ID number for primary control stations

Also provided is a link to the National Geodetic Survey page for obtaining data sheets. For the primary control stations, you can use a "copy and paste" from the database record to enter the PID into the NGS form.

Note that the survey points on the map are much more accurate than the background aerial photos. Where differences between the photos and the road centerlines exist, use the road centerlines to establish the relative location of the monument in the field. The aerial photos shown on the web site are from the USGS DOQ data set. They are for general reference only.
